recovery programs

The New Foundation Center is a community made up of all kinds of individuals ― working together, learning together, relaxing together ― everyone striving to manage their mental illnesses, all sharing a deeply felt belief in their personal power to shape their own futures.

“Saying, ‘I can recover,’ is radical. But once I came to The New Foundation Center, I began to feel better.” ― Tom [read his story]

We offer a wide range of services that contribute to recovery; in each, we encourage decision making and self-expression. One of our main purposes is – simply – education: the more members know about their health and wellness, about their symptoms and treatments, the better equipped they are to manage their recovery. We want members to get the facts, to discuss their needs with others, to clarify their options, and to build new skills.

Skills Training – Participants learn and practice skills in preventing relapses, coping with symptoms, and developing self-sufficiency. Groups and classes cover medication education, independent living, stress management, self-esteem, fitness, health management, cognitive behavioral therapy, and anger management.

Recovery Groups – Working in groups and one-on-one with counselors, members draw a path to recovery. They can participate in Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) and Members’ Council. For every member, peer support is available and encourage. Our philosophy centers on the wellness of the whole person, body and spirit.

Expressive Arts – Creative expression is more than a means to recovery; it’s also fun and relaxing! Our members can choose among musical self-expression, art studio, choir, drumming, creative writing, and art therapy.

Support Groups – Members develop and use support within and outside the New Foundation Center to reinforce their recovery. Here, options include work support, family support, men’s and women’s support, and substance abuse/dual diagnosis support.

Social Activities – Member can participate in activities designed for enjoyment with friends, including theater, camping, sports, dinner club, and concerts.

Also, we provide one-on-one and group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, and assessment for members who want assistance getting entitlements, budgeting, setting goals, finding housing, advocating with agencies or government departments, or connecting to services from other providers. Every member works with a case manager to draw up and execute a recovery plan.

“Our members are like anyone else ― they like activities that educate, entertain, and enliven. At the New Foundation Center, we believe each person is best suited to shape his or her own recovery.” ― Sue Shimon, executive director
